Erasmus+ Adult Education: Cork ETB’s Clonakilty Centre
“Never thought at my age that I’d be offered an Erasmus to go anywhere. I thought that only happened to young people in college.”
Although Cork ETB has a long history with Erasmus+, adult‑learner mobilities were a relatively new venture. Cork College of Further Education and Training’s Clonakilty Centre first trip brought their group to Vigo, Spain, a trip that offered not only a new cultural experience but new confidence. Despite language differences, the shared language of craft bridged every gap.
One of the project’s most powerful impacts was personal transformation. Learners who once doubted their abilities – or who had left education early – found themselves stepping forward with renewed confidence.
Staff reflect that the magic of the project lies in the way it brings people together, breaking down barriers, and reminding participants of what they share: “It’s that celebration of culture, the celebration of identity… you end up with people realising we’re kind of all the same. That’s the transformative piece behind Erasmus – you can’t capture it in a final report or a document.”
