Erasmus+ School Education: Beech Hill College

Beech Hill College’s Erasmus+ project is a powerful example of how meaningful learning can foster a sense of belonging and encourage young people to play an active role in democratic life.

Their Erasmus+ School mobility took their students to the heart of the European Union in Strasbourg. The visit offered a powerful, first‑hand look at how European democracy functions and how deeply interconnected our countries truly are.

The students explored the institutions that help shape policies affecting millions across Europe. Students left with a stronger sense of belonging, recognising that they are part of something bigger than themselves. They came to understand that their voices matter — not only within their local communities but also at a European level.

Former student Amy reflected on the importance of these international connections: “I think it’s important for schools in Ireland to connect with schools in Europe to understand the similarities and that we’re all human and that we face the same struggles… We’re all the same, just different nationalities.”

The school’s Acting Deputy Principal Ciara Crowe echoed this sentiment, emphasising how transformative the visit was for the group: “Getting into the European Parliament and the courts of human rights really affected their view of the European Parliament. They wouldn’t have been aware of how getting involved in the European Union and voting, how that would really affect their life and their future. And I don’t think that would have been possible without mobility like this.”

The experience of Beech Hill College is a reminder that when students step into the spaces where decisions are made, they don’t just learn about democracy — they begin to see themselves as part of it.
